SpiderMan (2017) – Where Next?

SpiderMan is a household name. Much like Batman, if you walked up to someone in the street and asked them did they know SpiderMan, and I guarantee they would say yes. They may even be able to tell you his name.

Its fair to say that SpiderMan is a popular character, and the 5 movies in 15 years are testament to that fact. Asking about the movies however, may get you a different response than a happy acknowledgement of the character. After years at Sony, Marvel’s favorite  web slinger is back home, but maybe that’s the issue..

What do Marvel do with SpiderMan that Sony hasn’t already? Sony had the benefit of being the first people to make movies for SpiderMan, they`ve covered key story points and used several main villains. 13 of them – Burglar, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Harry Osborn, Sandman, Venom, (The) Lizard, Gentleman, Electro, (The) Rhino, Black Cat, Donald Menken, and Alistair Smythe

Thankfully, Spiderman has a rogues gallery that nearly rivals that of Batman`s, and even better, there are still more A-List villains available to be used: Carnage, Mysterio, Vulture, Scorpion, Maybe even stealing Kingpin from the Daredevil Netflix series? Hell, it wouldn’t be too bad to bring back characters that have already been used, just do them right

Of course, you cant have Carnage without Venom first, which would be a necessary evil of restarting the Spiderman movies. If Marvel are feeling particularly daring, they can cover Spiderman’ origins in Civil War, and allow the solo movie to feature an experienced Spiderman. This could allow them to add the Sinister Six, not only would it be an incredible surprise, it would allow Marvel to catch up with DC`s Suicide Squad.

Villains are only half of what makes SpiderMan great, the other half is the great supporting cast. Uncle Ben and Aunt May are guaranteed to appear, origin story or not. Superhero movies love a good flashback. The love interest is something i’m not too sure about. Gwen Stacey met a somewhat grisly fate in TASM2, so i dont know if Marvel would consider her back on the table for the reboot. That would leave Mary Jane Watson, who has recently made a trip to the pages of Iron Man in the comics. With comics trying to reflect the movies and vice versa, should we really expect Spiderman’s favorite red head on screen next year?

They’ve done little to no wrong thus far, so i have my faith in the House of M

Right now, everything is up in the air, and speculation is ripe. Agree with me? Disagree with me? Sound off in the comments section below!
