Deadpool (2016) Review

deadpool1-gallery-imageX really is gonna give it to ya.

Deadpool is a movie that nearly didn’t happen, which is hard to imagine considering how much hype this movie has garnered. Its funny how some leaked test footage could send the internet into such a frenzy, that the movie had to be made.

Fox Entertainment certainly acted upon the new found hype, releasing many many trailers and promotional material for the movie. That being said, I would avoid all trailers if possible, they spoil a lot of the movie, more so than other movies. This somewhat softened the impact of some of the jokes. However on the flipside, some of my favorite lines from the trailer didn’t even make it into the movie. MINOR SPOILERS: “Daddy needs to express some rage”, “UGH” (Gesturing towards his dick) and my personal favorite “I don’t have time your X-Men bullshit Colossus”

Now, lets get on with the actual movie, shall we? (Minor to Major plot spoilers follow, reader discretion is advised)

Starting off with the good, Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool, it was a match made in heaven. The jokes, although some of the more generic sex jokes and periods of excessive swearing didn’t hit with me, were all incredibly well done. Sections where the fourth wall is broken (A staple of the character) were a highlight of the movie, from turning the camera away or notifying the lack of other Xmen in the movie. Even the other characters get in on the sneaky jokes, a scene referring to advancing the plot of the movie was a particular highlight.

A pleasant surprise was how much I liked the supporting cast of character, each of them quirky as deadpool himself: Weasel, who provides many of the ugly jokes at Deadpool’s expense, Vanessa, Wade’s stripper girlfriend, Dopinder, the hilarious taxi driver, and Blind Al, Deadpool’s elderly black blind roommate.

Of course, there’s also the two X-Men in the movie: Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Now, i know of these two characters, but that’s as far as my knowledge extends. The personality types of these two may be exaggerated as this is the Deadpool movie, but I loved them anyways. Warhead is your generic moody teen (A point Deadpool picks up on) and Colossus is the good cop, goody two shoes. Mixed with his Russian accent, he became my favourite character. Much of his comedic value came from the fact he really doesn’t belong in an adult movie like Deadpool, hes just much too innocent.

The weakest characters in the movie are the villains, which truly is a shame, because they’re the reason the story isn’t as good as it could have been. Our Antagonists come in the form of mutants Ajax (Who feels no pain) and the super strong Angel Dust (She is only referred to as Angel, confusing me with the idea that this was an adaptation of another X-MEN member, Angel. At least initially). Sadly neither of these make for interesting villains. Fra- Ajax is an asshole for the sake of being an asshole and Angel is just the one that punches people. Not that I expected loads of character development in a Deadpool movie, just something a little more than a bad guy with a British accent.

From the promotional footage, we knew this movie was going to be an origins movie. I was surprised to see how much of this movie was dedicated to how Deadpool became Deadpool. I was even more surprised to find out how well done the origins portion of this movie were done, and how emotionally invested I became, especially during the scenes of torture. Sadly the rest of the movies storyline doesn’t equate. It is a revenge story, through and through, following many cliche beats. Luckily the movies flair keeps the proceedings from getting to cookie cutter average

Although I’m not a fan of the story, I am a big fan of how the the story is told, it switches between the origins and current events until the half way mark. This really helped the movies pacing

Will it get any Oscars? No. That doesn’t mean that it’s not a fun movie. The storyline and villains are a little lacking but the movie is filled with Deadpool charm, and at the end of the day, what more can you want?

Final Score: 8/10
